A Fully Revised Edition Featuring New Material on Coroutines, Debugging, Testing, Parsing, String Formatting, and More Python 3 is the best version of the language yet: It is more powerful, convenient, consistent, and expressive than ever before. Now, leading Python programmer Mark Summerfield demonstrates how to write code that takes full advantage of Python 3's features and idioms. Programming in Python 3, Second Edition, brings together all the knowledge you need to write any program, use any standard or third-party Python 3 library, and create new library modules of your own.Summerfield draws on his many years of Python experience to share deep insights into Python 3 development you won't find anywhere else. He begins by illuminating Python's "beautiful heart": the eight key elements of Python you need to write robust, high-performance programs. Building on these core elements, he introduces new topics designed to strengthen your practical expertise-one concept and hands-on example at a time. Coverage includesDeveloping in Python using procedural, objectoriented, and functional programming paradigms Creating custom packages and modules Writing and reading binary, text, and XML files, including optional compression, random access, and text and XML parsing Leveraging advanced data types, collections, control structures, and functions Spreading program workloads across multiple processes and threads Programming SQL databases and key-value DBM files Debugging techniques-and using Test Driven Development to avoid bugs in the first place Utilizing Python's regular expression mini-language and module Parsing techniques, including how to use the third-party PyParsing and PLY modules Building usable, efficient, GUI-based applications Advanced programming techniques, including generators, function and class decorators, context managers, descriptors, abstract base classes, metaclasses, coroutines, and more Programming in Python 3, Second Edition, serves as both tutorial and language reference. It assumes some prior programming experience, and it is accompanied by extensive downloadable example code-all of it tested with Python 3 on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Dive into the world of the Flask microframework to develop an array of web applicationsAbout This BookStructure, compose, and build powerful Flask HTML-based applications and JSON/XML-based APIs using advanced application design patternsIntegrate third-party Flask extensions for tasks such as social authentication, sending emails, and interacting with databases and cache layersBuild a series of Flask applications of increasing complexityWho This Book Is ForIf you are a Python web developer who has developed basic Flask applications and now wants to build a series of more complex web applications, then this is the book for you. What You Will LearnUse the virtualenv Python package to effectively isolate your development environmentsConvert a simple one-file Flask application into a more full-fledged multi-package applicationIntegrate Flask-Login for simple user authentication, Flask-WTF for forms, and Flask-SQLAlchemy for database interactionsExplore URL routing and dispatching in a blueprint structured applicationCreate your own signals and consume them within your applicationLearn to leverage Werkzeug, the WSGI library that powers much of FlaskImplement custom exceptions for handling non-20x response codesWrite your own CLI tools for administrative and development tasks of your Flask application using Flask-Script/ClickBuild your Flask extensions to encapsulate reusable behaviors across your applicationsIntegrate your application with open source JavaScript-based graphing libraries to create simple data visualizationsIn DetailFlask is a small but powerful web development framework for Python. Though Flask is termed a micro-framework, it is no way lacking in functionality; there are many extensions available to Flask which helps it to function at the same level as other large frameworks such as Django and Ruby on Rails. This book will demonstrate how to develop a series of web application projects with the Python web micro-framework, and leverage extensions and external Python libraries and APIs to extend the development of a variety of larger and more complex web applications. The book will start by explaining Python's Virtualenv library and how to create and switch between multiple virtual environments. You'll first build an SQL database-backed application, which will use Flask-WTF, Flask-SQLAlchemy, Jinja templates, and other methods. Next you'll move on to a timeline application, built using concepts including pytest-Flask, the Blinker package, data modelling for user timelines, exception handling, and creating and organizing CLI tools.Moving on, you'll discover how to implement a photo timeline application where you'll explore topics such as writing and running celery tasks, API error handling and testing, and Werkzeug middlewares. Finally, the book walks you through creating an application which fetches data from GitHub and stores it locally. You will also learn how to install and configure Flask-Click extension.Style and approachThis book covers how to effectively use the Flask micro-framework to develop a series of web applications. Each chapter focusses on the development of an application increasing in complexity with easy steps to follow.

Advanced Database Implementation and Benchmarking

This work focuses on a methodology to help bring many of our database prototypes to reside on the top of a common workbench platform that leads to uniformity and removes overlap across different subsystem. Subsystem currently included are: a runner for SQL on a variety of database platforms, a runner for Quilt queries, ElementalDB, an experimental database system used for instruction in a graduate database implementation course, our own XQuery engine which aims at handling data in terabyte range stored in our storage in paginated form using our pagination algorithm. An XML based framework has been developed for benchmarking subsystems to make experiments completely repeatable at click of a button starting from creation of storage, loading of data sets, execution of commands, collecting performance data in XML-based logs to reporting using XQuery queries on the XML logs. With a very small learning curve, the resulting workbench can be used by students, instructors, developers and researchers alike and managed easily.
