Ensuring Interoperability in eDiscovery Process

Digital forensics is a very important area that carries special sensibility in analyzing and studying digital evidence not only in cyber crime cases, but also in house or localized digital crimes. eDiscovery makes it necessary to identify the evidence which is in the form of metadata. To discover and analyze the metadata in a proper manner for a litigation process in different environments, interoperability is one of the central problems. In order to attain interoperability, there is a standard termed as EDRM XML v1.1. However, this standard needs further modifications and enhancements to ensure real interoperability in an arbitrary eDiscovery process. A novel XML schema is proposed along with the necessary changes from the current EDRM XML v1.1. The assessment and the evaluation of the system demonstrated that XSD can ensure interoperability in eDiscovery process indeed.

XML Information Retrieval

XML is being adopted as a common storage format in scientific data repositories, digital libraries, and on the World Wide Web. As such, there is a need for information retrieval systems that can efficiently and effectively store, search and retrieve information from XML document collections. To evaluate the effectiveness of such systems, test collections are necessary. Such test collections have been built by INEX, the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval. In this book, we address several fundamental questions surrounding the field of XML information retrieval. In particular, we focus on how information retrieval and database approaches could be combined for effective XML retrieval, how relevance should be defined in XML retrieval, how the effectiveness of XML retrieval systems should be evaluated, and how information retrieval from XML document collections could be used in different application scenarios. The analysis presented in the book should be especially useful to academics and professionals in the Information Retrieval and Native XML Database fields, or anyone else who may be interested in the development of future interactive search systems.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Xena (short for XML Electronic Normalising for Archives) is an open-source software package intended for digital preservation. It was developed by the National Archives of Australia. In contrast to server-based solutions for institutions such as DSpace, Xena can be installed on any desktop computer, offering individuals a way to avoid digital obsolescence. Xena is available free of charge under the GNU General Public License. Xena either converts files into an openly specified format, such as ODF or PNG, or else it performs ASCII Base64 encoding on binary files and wraps the output with XML metadata headers and footers. The resulting .xena file is plain text, although the content of the data itself is not directly human-readable.
